About Sangeet 2000 - This federal non-profit (501c3) organization, aka Society for Indian Music is dedicated to providing a forum for high-level professional performers of traditional Indian music and dance to interact with the Austin world music community by giving recitals and offering workshops in which local music lovers and musicians can participate. In other words, our mission is to make the traditional performing arts of India accessible to Austinites by providing opportunities for listening/watching, learning, and participating. The objective of offering workshops such as these is to teach the students selected materials that they can prepare for performance on selected occasions. I will continue to work with them on the material presented in the workshops, in the case of instrumental and vocal ones, while Warren and Jason will facilitate the percussion section.

This is a story about gatherings of Indian Music Gurus and students at Amie Mac's house during the months of May and July 2000. This first part is about the first workshop sessions on May 20th, 2000. By the way, these workshop sessions are for learning and this is shown in the relaxed posture and informal dress of the participants - concerts are quite another matter where dress is, naturally, much more formal in honor of the occasion.
