Assam© Series Professional Bansuri

Our Assam© series of Professional and Standard grade bansuri are made from select indian bambo called cinchor which only grows in the forests of Assam and only seasoned mature bamboo (3 to 4 years of age at cutting and dry aged a few more years) is used in making these bansuri. The holes use tried and true ancient methods of boring holes by using hot iron rod stock instead of drilling holes. Your order may have are slight variations from the photos since these are hand made and no two are exactly alike. These flutes are excellent high grade products but they are a notch lower than those by Sri Jeff Whittier found at our main Bansuri tab.

There is a protective carrying case listed below...please check dimensions to insure fit, specifically C, C# and D flutes are to large for this case.

Quick flute maintenance Q &A by Sri Jeff Whittier

Q:
"When I bought my first baby one many years ago in India, I was advised to occasionally oil it with mustard seed oil. More recently, I bought a grown up one from a player in India. Once I'd got it home, and stretched my hands to finger it, I oiled it with linseed oil, which seemed to me to improve the quality of the sound, though my main reason was to protect it from the moisture in the breath. Is this a good or a bad idea? I am replacing this bansuri because, as I was warned by the seller, it is slightly out of tune. Also, it has almost half an inch of bow in it's length. Is this bow detrimental to the sound?"

A:
"Linseed oil usually contains harmful additives. Mustard seed oil is edible. Which one would you rather have on your lips? Oil does protect from the moisture of the breath, but too much oil is bad too and will make the bamboo deteriorate. Twice a year, only on the inside, is enough. Bow is an aesthetic consideration. A slight bow doesn't mean much. However, a greater bow may also be accompanied by deformities in the diameter, and that will destroy the tuning."
