The Vocal Tanpura

Vocal Tanpuras come in a variety of types: Female, pitched above male is usually tuned around G or G#. Male is tuned lower, usually to between C and D. Vocal Tanpuras are much larger than Instrumental tanpuras as they must develop enough volume to keep up with the human voice. Instrumental tanpuras are much smaller as they are intended to be used with sitar, sarode, veena or other stringed instruments which, compared with the human voice, are relatively quiet. Both types may be used with instruments, but the larger vocal type needs to be played carefully at a lower volume as otherwise the instrument may not be heard properly.
